Edit, unsend, and pin

Every message has a menu of actions. What it contains depends on whether the message is yours, what it holds, and which platform you are on.

Unsent messages and system notices have no menu.

The two platforms offer the same actions under slightly different names.

Edit a message

You can edit a message when all of these are true:

  • It is your message.
  • It has text — a photo or document on its own cannot be edited.
  • It is not a poll. Poll questions are fixed once the poll is posted.
  • It is not a forwarded message.
  • It has not been unsent.

To edit:

  1. Open the message menu and choose Edit Message (Edit on mobile).
  2. The composer fills with the existing text, headed Editing message with a pencil beside it.
  3. Change the text and send.

The bar's close control cancels the edit and leaves the original untouched. Sending an empty message is refused with "Message cannot be empty", and a failure is reported as "Couldn't edit message".

An edited message carries a small Edited label above the bubble for everybody, so nobody is reading a changed message without knowing it changed. Whether the message used Markdown is kept across the edit — see Formatting and Markdown.

note

HushChat shows only that a message was edited. There is no way to view what it said before.

Unsend a message

Unsend Message (Unsend on mobile) removes the content of one of your own messages for everybody, not just for you.

What is left in its place is a note in the conversation. You see "You unsent this message"; everybody else sees the sender's first name followed by "unsent this message". Any attachment on the message goes with it.

A workspace administrator can also remove a message during moderation. Those read "This message was deleted by workspace admin" followed by the administrator's name, so it is clear the sender was not the one who removed it.

caution

Unsending cannot be undone, and it is immediate. The message disappears for everyone in the conversation, including people who had already read it.

Pin a message

Pinning keeps one important message visible at the top of the conversation for everyone in it.

  1. Open the message menu and choose Pin Message (Pin on mobile).
  2. A dialog titled Pin Message asks you to "Select how long you want to pin this message".
  3. Choose 1 day, 7 days or 30 days — or Cancel to back out.

The pinned bar

A pinned message appears in a bar across the top of the conversation, labelled Pinned with the sender's name and the first lines of the message. A pinned GIF is shown as GIF rather than a link.

  • Select the bar to jump to the message in the conversation.
  • Select the close control at its right — labelled Unpin message — to unpin it.

The menu entry flips to Unpin Message (Unpin on mobile) on the message that is currently pinned, so you can unpin from either place.

note

A conversation holds one pinned message at a time. Pinning a second message replaces the first.

Pinning and unpinning leave a short notice in the conversation — "You pinned a message today" or "You unpinned a message today" — so the rest of the group can see the top of their conversation changed and why.

Report a message

Report Message (Report on mobile) is available on other people's messages. It opens a dialog titled Report Message asking "Why are you reporting this message?", with a list of reasons to choose from. After you send it, HushChat confirms with "Report submitted. We'll review it within 24 hours."
