Delete your account
Deleting your account closes it everywhere at once. This page describes exactly what goes and what stays, so you can be sure before you start.
There is no recovery window and no restore. If you only want to leave one workspace, or only want to sign out of a device, do that instead — both are described at the bottom of this page.
Delete your account
- Open your profile — Profile in the sidebar on the web, or the Profile tab on iOS and Android.
- Select Delete account, the red row near the bottom.
- Read the confirmation. It is titled Delete Account and says "This permanently deletes your account and removes you from all workspaces. This cannot be undone."
- Type your own email address into the box. The prompt above it reads Type, then your address,
then to confirm:, and the box itself prompts you with
your email. - Select Delete.
Until what you type matches your address, Delete stays dimmed and does nothing. Capitalisation and stray spaces around it do not matter. Cancel closes the confirmation and changes nothing.
Once it succeeds you are signed out immediately and returned to the sign-in screen. There is no extra confirmation step and no email to click.
What is deleted
| Deleted | Detail |
|---|---|
| Your membership of every workspace | All of them, not just the one you are signed in to |
| Your sign-in | The account you log in with is removed, so the address can no longer sign in |
| Your profile in each workspace | Name, photo and contact details are scrubbed |
| Your active sessions | Everything signed in as you is disconnected right away |
| Your push notifications | Registered devices stop receiving message, call, and reaction alerts |
What stays
The messages you already sent stay where they are. They remain in their conversations, and everyone else in those conversations can still read the whole history exactly as before. What changes is the name on them: your messages are attributed to a deleted user rather than to you, and your photo is gone.
The same is true of anything else you left behind — files you shared, reactions you added, groups you created. Deleting your account removes you, not the record of the conversations other people took part in.
If you want a particular message gone, delete that message before you delete your account. Once your account is closed you can no longer sign in to remove anything.
If you are the last administrator
The last administrator of a workspace cannot delete their account. HushChat checks every workspace you belong to before it changes anything, and if you are the only administrator left in even one of them, the whole deletion is refused — nothing is removed anywhere. The app reports that it "Couldn't delete your account. Please try again."
Retrying will not help. To get past it:
- Open each workspace where you are the only administrator.
- Promote someone else to administrator.
- Come back and delete your account.
This is deliberate: a workspace with no administrator has nobody who can invite people, change roles, or adjust its settings, and no one left who can appoint a replacement.
Leaving one workspace instead
Deleting your account is not the same as an administrator removing you from a workspace, and it is usually not what you want if you are only leaving one team.
| You delete your account | An administrator removes you | |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Every workspace you belong to | The one workspace they are administering |
| Your sign-in | Deleted — the address can no longer sign in | Untouched |
| Your other workspaces | All closed | Unaffected — you keep working in them |
| Your messages | Stay, shown as a deleted user | Stay, shown as a deleted user |
| Who starts it | You | An administrator of that workspace |
So if you are simply moving off one team, ask an administrator of that workspace to remove you. You keep your account and everything else you are part of.
And if you only want to step away from the app on this device, use Log out rather than Delete account — it signs you out and leaves everything intact.
